WHITHER HUMANITY?

WHITHER HUMANITY?

The recent riots in London have made me to think once again more seriously about humanity.
I shudder when I see growth in violence all over the world. People seem to get violent even over trivial things. There is a growing tendency towards anarchy, disruption, destruction and there is more and more aggression. And,as I see this happening, my heart cries out,'WHY?' What are the causes of this terrible, destructive, brutal violence right through the world?
I wonder if you have yourself asked this question:WHY? Or, do you accept it as inevitable, as part of life?-Oh,how sad that such apathy is also growing alongwith violence!
But,looking within ourselves,we see that each one of us is also violent in his personal life. We get angry; we do not like people to criticise us; we do not brook any interference with our own particular lives; we are very defensive, and therefore aggressive, with regard to our particular belief or dogma. So,individually, in our private secret lives we are aggressive, violent, and also outwardly, in our relationship with others. When we are ambitious, greedy, acquisitive we are aggressive, violent and destructive. And this has been happening for ages! Our history is nothing but a long logbook of so many wars,so many destructive forces let loose on the world!
So, we must inquire into why human beings throughout the ages have been so violent, brutal, aggressive, cruel, destructive-destroying their own species?
I think one of the reasons is the 'animal instict' we  have inherited. As we have evolved from animals we have inherited this aggressiveness, violence and hatred.Like dogs fighting over a particular area ,we fight over some pieces of land where even a blade of grass doesn't grow! We too are basically selfish. Each man is fighting for himself, each man wants a position, power, prestige.
Another main reason of violence is our need for security. Each one of us wants to be secure, sure, certain, most particularly in our relationships and many are the instances where people use force or violence to keep someone attached to them. See how even today the tyrants in China,Libiya,Syria,Yemen etc are forcefully keeping their own people 'bonded' to them! And what to say of those men who won't allow their women to show even their nails to others!
These are some major factors that bring about this enormous, destructive, cruel relationship between man and man.
Oh,but the world needs peace, not violence! Fot that we must be peaceful, for it is only through peace that we can find out what is true, what is beauty, what is love. Through violence you can never  find what love is,what real beauty is.
Violence is not merely wars or looting or arson. Violence is much more subtle than  that. For example, when you are competing or trying to surpass another, there is a latent violence in you!
Violence is basically division. You and me are bound to be seperated by our beliefs, our dogmas. Any form of seperateness,of division, breeds violence. Superficially we may tolerate each other, we may live  as neighbours or go to the same workplace, but inwardly we are seperate- I am Christian and you are the Hindu or the Muslim or the Arab or the Chinese or  whatever it may be. So, essentially, this division, brought about through belief, through psychological exclusiveness, breeds violence and also excludes every form of affection and love.
Please just introspect and see how you regard someone who is not of the same culture, the same outlook, who thinks differently from you; the occassions when you consider yourself slightly superior to some one else. Where there is prejudice there is division.
So, what should we do?Knowing that we human beings are violent, are seperative, what are we to do?
It is all easy to give sermons like,'spread love, universal brotherhood, compassion' etc. all this is impractical for a common man in his daily life.
There will be  an end only when you yourself become non-violent. We  must begin with ourselves as individuals. we can not make the whole world non-violent in a flash. Forget the world,be,as an individual, non-violent. we must give full attention to ourselves. We should keep a watch over our behaviour, our utterences, our deeds. find out when you are angry, when you have prejudice, why do you hate someone or someone's belief, his way of living- and put all that away!Yes,understand their uselessness and harmfulness and put them away.
This self check is very necessary because at the moment of violence- which is the moment of anger- we are obviously not looking at ourselves. We react immediately and thus start a chain of reactions leading to violence. If we take a pause of just a few breaths at that moment we can nip the ensuing violence in the bud! The simple maxims like 'think before you act' or 'look before you tread' are really very useful. when we recognise our own faults, our own shortcomings, we become supple. Then we are able to accomodate the flaws in other  people. Being accomodative automatically generates brotherhood and love.
Similarly, let us have an open mind. you will observe that we generally doubt something which is good, we seldom doubt which is bad. If someone says,"I love you",we usually suspect his intentions and wonder what his/her real motive behind this? So, we doubt love, we doubt compassion, we even doubt our own happiness! we doubt the goodness in people, but take all the negative aspects in life for granted! This warps our thinking and causes division.
So, in order to save humanity and by that  this world, let us start cleansening ourselves from within.Once all the impurity of divisive thinking goes away we will automatically find ourselves united!

The Divine Intruder...

Note:since the time my friend Mohini told me about her God 'Krishna' I got curious about him at first and then never knew when He took hold of my mind! So,I had to go and see Him and so I went to ISKON Temple on the Soho street here today and was further charmed by Him.In that state of mind, this poem has come to me.

THE DIVINE INTRUDER..
Why have you come in my life
suddenly like the breeze of May?
why have you chosen for meeting me
Your own glorious birthday?

I didn't know how you came to know
That your sweet smile makes me mad,
But to take advantageof a girl's weakness,
Don't you know,it is so bad?

How I wish to be that flute
Which your lips touch so lovingly!
Oh,play upon me and please make
My whole being a sweet melody!

But who is that girl clinging to you,
As if you belong only to her?
Though jealousy should have no place in love,
Yet in my heart it does flutter.

Why my heart goes out to you
When it already houses a lover?
Whether real,virtual or etherial,
you have over me a tremendous power!

Or,are you Jesu in this form
Bluish like a newly formed water-laden cloud?
Oh,whoever you are,you are my Lord,
And to be your girl makes me proud!

IN THE LAP OF NATURE

IN THE LAP OF NATURE...

Away from the city's hubbub,in the lap of Nature,
Where only the present reigns,neither past,nor future;
Come, let us forget our troubles, worries and the fear,
and sit amidst those trees and brooks, where God is near.

Oh,the breeze is pleasant, and flowers are in bloom,
Bright sun is also here to dispel any gloom,
where do you go,oh my friend, come here with me,
Listen, how the thrushes call with a dulcet melody!

Look, the cup of the cowslip is so full of honey,
Just a drop of that nectar can ease all agony,
Why do you look so askance at that greyish sky?
oh,those clouds, like wanton boys they'll just pass by.

Here you'll realise that you are a special being,
And there is a song in your heart, given to you to sing!

AS I LIVE...

LIVING THE NIGHTMARE AGAIN:WITH OPEN EYES.

LIVING THE NIGHTMARE AGAIN: WITH OPEN EYES.

After an uneasy calm has settled down upon my Britain, it is time to reflect upon the recent riots a little analytically.
The shooting of Mark Duggan, suspected of drug running, was scarcely even a pretext and the subsequent riots were in no way a protest against that incident but were,in fact, a criminal and organised use of that incident by the goons to go on a rampage.
Though I am myself a young girl, I shudder when I look around at  the people of my generation. I find an aggressive malignity inscribed in their faces and manners. Their 'in your face' nonchallent stare, the arrogant swagger, the adoption of fashions that signify aggression, a most exaggerated sence of misplaced self-esteem and apathy towards doing anything constructive-oh,all this is most alarming! Their 'culture'(if we could call it as such) is almost 'Satanic' and their motto seems to be "Fair is Foul and Foul is Fair"!
This has led to establishing 'a gang culture', especially in those areas that are the poorest and by definition house the black and Asian immigration population. The 'ganglords' train very young kids in vandalism. They are taught to hate the system, the culture, the education and the elders.
With the result great illiteracy and gross indiscipline has set in, so much so that almost 40% of Londoners are illiterates(By official figures).Consequently this has resulted in great unemployment.
No wonder then that young kids(even as young as 11 years) and drug addicts, drunks and unemployed youth made up most of the mobs that went on a rampage for four nights around Britain. Their evident glee, celebration and triumphant smiles among the devastation they wrought, as if in victory, bears an ample testimony to the strength of their destructive urge.
The more shocking thing was that all this rampage was highly organised! The looters summoned each other through messages on their 'Blackberries'. They were using 'Twitter' and other  'social media' to  announce where and when they would congregate and hit next!
Masked or hooded youths started setting fire to cars in the street, break the glass frontage of shops  and enter and loot them. And what was their main target?-Designer labels!-Clothes,shoes, electronic gadgets, computers, mobile phones and mostly alcohol!...
Unfortunately the Metropolitan Police were petrified of reacting too fast and their mismanagement ultimately meant that the rest of the country had to pay a heavy price- a bill of over one hundred million pounds of insurance claims for a country sinking deeper into the red!
It is not a failure of multiculturism, as many  are thinking, but a failure of the state to recognise that certain pockets of the city are showing dangerous signs of egrogious violence.
Though we Britishers have stood up with  constructive programmes like 'Voluntary Reading Help' to fight against the illiteracy and 'Operation Clean' to clean and rebuild our city, alongwith looting of 'Branded goods', the most important brand has been  vandalised beyond repairs- Brand Britain!

OH MY COUNTRY! MY ENGLAND!!

OH MY COUNTRY,MY ENGLAND!

I feel ashamed and as if my modesty has been outraged when I look around the mindless destruction caused by those vermins called 'rioters'.
oh, it is the worst nightmare that has come to haunt my beautiful country,'this other eden' is being turned into a living hell. I never had imagined even in my worst dreams that I will see such destruction and be a sufferer myself!
After celebrating 'the friendship day' and the biosterous bash thereafter I  had stayed back at my friend Veronica's place and was returning home  on Monday late evening with my three friends from Ealing.we were in great mood which was soon dampened when we saw a heavy traffic jam ahead.I was astonished to see so many cars standing on the High street in most disorderly manner and a little ahead we could see smoke. As soon as I halted, a middle aged man,who was running past my car, stopped and shouted at me,"girls, leave the car and find some safer place, run!"
I couldn't understand him but he didn't remain even for a few seconds to explain his words. On lowering down the window glasses we could hear shouts and screams and sensing trouble Veronica started crying and weeping. Anna and Gloria also started squirming in their seats.I too got frightened and  four of us parked and abandoned our car on the curb and ran to a restaurant for shelter.
within a few minutes a mob of young boys and some girls came menacingly and started pelting stones and bricks and bottles on the restaurant, shattering all its glasses within just a few moments. There was a great commotion inside. We girls and some women present there started crying and weeping and the men were dumbstruck and fidgeting. We were about twenty people. An elderly person soon took the control of the situation, asking all the women to rush to the kitchen and hide there.then he led the other men to take up whatever they could lay hands on like chairs, stools, jars and curtain rods to face the rioters.
Seeing their staunch stand the rioters  went away to destroy other establishments. They were looting and burning shops and also torching the parked cars at will and in mad glee!
We girls remained huddled in the 'wine cellar' of that restaurant for almost about four hours when by midnight there was an eerie  and uneasy calm established. When we came out,all I could see was the burned skeleton of my Bentley. It was destroyed beyond repairs.Even the interiors like AC and music system was charred down to shapeless plastic lump.I was shocked beyond tears. my laptop, which was in the car,was also destroyed.I was trembling and weeping and was unable to answer the repeated calls from my mom. We were about ten miles away from my house and had no strength at all to take even a few steps. It was past midnight and we were directionless. all around us was a great commotion and everybody was running helter skelter. We begged other people to give us lift but they perhaps thought that we young girls were from the rioters!
we walked about three to four miles through back alleys and dirt roads when finally we could get a bus to Central London. I reached home with other girls at about four in the morning on Tuesday.
Last two days I have been in great daze and only last evening I have recollected myself when my mom took me alongwith her to work as a volunteer to clean up our city, saying,"Let them destroy,we'll rebuild".These words jolted me out of my stupor and made me to face the reality boldly.
I don't rue my personal loss much but I am hurt to the heart to see my great country being bled by her own children.
  Shakespeare had said,
"Nought shall make us rue,
If England to itself do rest but true"...
Now so many theories are being put up about these riots. It is termed as a part of 'global unrest' on account of financial crisis and joblessness of youth. The current austerity measures like shutting down 'non-essential' public services such as  'youth clubs' are said to have backfired, creating anger among youth.

Whatever it may be,I only think that no person who has even an iota of respect for his homeland 'Great Britain' will try to cause her harm. All these hoodlooms do not think England as their country. They want only the benefits but don't want to do their duty towards this nation. Will anybody stab his parents only  because they aren't able to give him the luxuries he wants? these goons only want to enjoy life at the cost of others.Their rioting is nihilistic and criminal and on the top of that, they have discovered that they can do all this rioting, destruction and looting and  still get away with it!
I agree that many of today's problems are reflective of a lack of genuine socio-economical and cultural integration which has led to deprivation and de-facto ghettoism. But still I feel that we Britishers are greatly lacking in patriotism. The outsiders who have made England their ' home',have not assimilated fully with our culture and feel proud to retain their own 'cultural' and their homeland identity while enjoying all the benefits given by England. And the rioters are mainly from these outsiders.it is a fact and has to be squarely addressed.
Though I am greatly shaken, I have vowed that I won't allow my great country  to be ransacked by these brainless beasts.I will lend my hand to rebuild what they have destroyed.Yes,I will work more hard and earn enough money to buy a new car and new laptop. I won't crib or go looting. I am proud to be British and will uphold the banner of my great country, come what may!
